The American Civil War was fought between the United States and eleven seceding southern states from 1861 to 1865.

Fighting in the far western territories was a small part of the war by any measure of numbers, but it settled the question of whether the Confederacy would reach the Pacific. The New Mexico campaign of 1862 was the only serious attempt.
