New Mexico campaign
From Justinfo Wiki, the open reference
The New Mexico campaign was a Confederate operation in New Mexico Territory between February and July 1862, intended to seize the territory and open a route toward the Colorado goldfields and the Pacific.
A brigade of Texas mounted volunteers under Henry Hopkins Sibley moved up the Rio Grande from Fort Bliss, won a costly victory at the Battle of Valverde on 21 February, and occupied Albuquerque and Santa Fe in March without securing the supplies the plan depended on. The campaign was decided at the Battle of Glorieta Pass on 28 March, where the destruction of the Confederate supply train left the brigade unable to hold what it had taken.
The retreat that followed cost Sibley close to a third of his command. No further Confederate attempt was made on the Southwest.
