Battle of Valverde

The Battle of Valverde was fought on 21 February 1862 near a ford of the Rio Grande north of Fort Craig, New Mexico Territory.

Confederate forces under Henry Hopkins Sibley drove Union troops under Edward R. S. Canby from the field and captured six guns, but took losses they could not replace and failed to reduce Fort Craig, which remained astride their line of communication for the rest of the New Mexico campaign.
