The Battle of Glorieta Pass was fought over three days in March 1862 in the mountains southeast of Santa Fe, and decided the Confederacy's only serious attempt on the Southwest. Confederate troops under William Read Scurry pushed a Union column back along the Santa Fe Trail on 28 March and held the field at the end of the day. While they did so, a Union detachment crossed Glorieta Mesa behind them and burned the brigade's entire supply train - seventy-odd wagons, the ammunition, the rations and most of the animals. Scurry withdrew to Santa Fe within two days, and the last Confederate units left New Mexico Territory in July.
